I wanted to let you know that there is a trip being planned to go to Bhutan this fall to present the teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III to the King and people of Bhutan and there may still be slots available for followers of His Holiness who would like to join the journey. Let me know if you are interested and I can give you more details, but it does require advance clearance from the government of Bhutan and you need to be part of the 8 day tour to even enter. I am planning on doing this. Since the King and the people of Bhutan learn English in their schools as well as their native language, I am very interested in sharing what we have of the Buddha’s teachings in English as well as Chinese. We will also be offering Butter Lights in honor of the former King’s birthday and other gifts to the Bhutan people.

The tour also includes a hike to the Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery as I think all or at least most tours of Bhutan do. This is probably the most famous site in Bhutan. Legend has it that in the 8th-century Guru Padmasambhava was carried to a cave at that site on the back of a disciple who had transformed herself into a tigress where he meditated for 3 years, 3 months, 3 days, and 3 hours. The monastery was built there in the late 17th century although “taktsang” translates more accurately into “tigress’ lair”. Its a 2,000 foot ascent and 3-4 to 8 hour hike and not recommended for anyone not in very good physical condition. I will not join this part of the tour as I understand the stairs are quite steep and it involves a hanging bridge over the valley below.

This trip is the result of our collaboration with Venerable Chandima who is also establishing a school and center in Bhutan, while the king of Bhutan is building a Bhutanese Center at Ven. Chandima’s Nagananda International Institute for Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka.
