Discussion on Preliminary Practices Continues on “Imparting the Absolute Truth through the Heart Sutra”

“Chuda sweeping,” from Pabongka Rinpoche’s “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand.”

Drawing above of Chudapanthaka (Chuda) sweeping out the temple is from Pabongka Rinpoche’s Liberation in the Palm of your Hand. Chuda became accomplished by chanting “Abandon dirt, abandon stains,” while sweeping Shakyamuni Buddha’s temple. This delightful and insightful story of how the Buddha taught a simple but devout disciple a simple verse enabling that disciple to realize prajna is one you should know and I am sure will be covered in C40-Lam Rim Chen Mo.

We will continue our discussion of the preliminary practices on October 15 at 9:00 am Pacific Daylight Time starting with the Three Sets of Pure Precepts that we must follow to become accomplished in the Dharma. We chant them every morning as the following Three Groups of Purifying Precepts:

“I vow to cut off all evil within me.  There will be no evil that I will not cut off.   I vow to practice all types of goodness.  There’ll be no type of goodness I will not practice. I vow to save all living beings.  There’ll be no living being that I will not save.”

However, we know we must first enlighten ourselves before we can save others. To do that you must also follow the Ten Wholesome Behaviors or Good Characteristics and the Four Limitless States of Mind. This class will focus on what these behaviors and mind states are and how we can achieve them.
